The PR 3 IDN - Rota dos Fósseis, is entirely set within the Penha Garcia parish .
Penha Garcia is located on the southern slope of the mountain from which it takes its name. Hikers will discover rocks, around Penha Garcia, where is easily found trace of fossils of different types of marine life that existed here some 480 million years ago .
It is a circular route that starts at tourism office of Penha Garcia.
This hike will take you up through the charming village streets where you will find a still operating traditional community oven (Forno comunitario) why you can buy fresh bread. Then a short uphill walk will bring you to discover among the narrow roads, a pillory (pelourinho) dating from the reign of D. Sebastião . The walk continues passing through the Church of Our Lady of Conception of Penha Garcia, and then goes up to the castle from where you can enjoy a charming scenery of the valley of the River Pônsul, the astonishing Penha Garcia cliffs and its mills . Then the hike climbs into the rocky mountain side, past the Lapa’s cave, past the dam, goes deep into a canyon where several old mills and a giant fossil collection are found. Fossils from the Penha Garcia Iconological Park are the key feature of one of the most important geosites of Naturtejo Global Geopark under UNESCO .Then you can even have a swim at the Fonte do Pego freshwater swimming pool (recommended in summer). The hike will lead you through pretty forests and fields and ends at the tourism office of Penha Garcia near a cafe at the parking lot.
